Polymer-polymer interaction, in the presence of a solvent as measured by viscometry

2001

Dilute solution viscometry experiments have been carried out in five ternary polymer systems solvent(1)/polymer(2)/polymer(3). Values of the specific viscosity of polymer (3) in a ‘binary solvent’ formed by polymer(2) + solvent(1) have been used to determine the compatibility of the polymer blends. Krigbaum and Wall formalism has been used to predict compatibility which relies on an interaction parameter that depends on the concentration, weight fraction and molar mass of each polymer. To reduce the dependences and to clarify the criterion of compatibility, a parameter independent of polymer (3) composition and molar mass has been deduced. This parameter shows the same behaviour with polyme…

Attributional and relational influence of numerals in S’ncamtho metaphors

2020

AbstractYouth varieties in Africa such as S’ncamtho, the Ndebele-based youth variety in Zimbabwe, and urban vernaculars interact with urban and modern experiences which offer them new materials and experiences to base their metaphors on compared to older metaphors in the base languages. This paper explores the use of numeral qualities and associations in the conceptualisation and orthographic representation of S’ncamtho metaphors. S’ncamtho is popular with urban youth and this makes social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp, SMS and Instagram key in the performance of the youth variety, a performance that includes the creation, use and contraction of metaphors. Numerals off…

Using 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium Trifluoromethanesulfonate as an Entrainer for the Extractive Distillation of Ethanol + Water Mixtures

2009

Isobaric vapor−liquid equilibria (VLE) for the ethanol + water + [emim][triflate] ternary system have been obtained at 100 kPa using a recirculating still. The ethanol + water binary system was also obtained. Furthermore, data were simulated with the Mock’s electrolyte nonrandom two-liquid (NRTL) model, using the solvent−solvent interaction parameters obtained from VLE data of the ethanol + water system and taking the solvent−ionic liquid (IL) interaction parameters for the other binary systems from previous works. The agreement between experimental and calculated data is very good, showing the predictive capacity of the model. The addition of [emim][triflate] produces the disappearance of …

Isobaric Vapor−Liquid and Liquid−Liquid Equilibria for Chloroform + Methanol + 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium Trifluoromethanesulfonate at 100 kPa

2009

Isobaric vapor−liquid equilibria for the binary system chloroform + methanol as well as the vapor−liquid equilibria for the chloroform + methanol + [emim][triflate] ternary system have been obtained at 100 kPa using a recirculating still. The ternary ionic liquid (IL) system presents an immiscibility zone at high chloroform composition, which increases with the temperature. Liquid−liquid equilibria for this system have also been determined. The measured ternary vapor−liquid equilibrium data were correlated using the Mock’s electrolyte nonrandom two-liquid (NRTL) model which reproduces reasonably well the experimental values and predicts the total disappearance of the azeotrope when the mole…

Solution properties of polyelectrolytes—V. Viscometric study of mixed polyanions in pure water

1990

Abstract A viscometric study of sodium polystyrene sulphonate (NaPSS) and sodium poly( l -glutamate) (NaPLG) in salt-free water has been carried out as a function of the total concentration, cm, and the concentration of one polyelectrolyte at fixed concentration of the other. The influences of the molecular weight and concentration are considered in order to establish the degree of compatibility. For the first time, an equation is proposed to define the reduced viscosity of the NaPSS + NaPLG mixture in water. The viscometric interaction parameter, Bm, taking into account the electrostatic and thermodynamic interactions between both polyions, is defined as a geometrical mean of the contribut…

Interfacial tension of demixed polymer solutions: augmentation by polymer additives

1997

The interfacial tension between phase separated polymer solutions increases pronouncedly upon the addition of asmall amounts of incompatible polymers. This feature is demonstrated by means of measurements with solutions of polystyrene in cyclohexane and the folloowing additives: poly(styrene-block-dimethylsiloxane), polyisobutylene and polydimethylsiloxane. Theoretical considerations based on a correlation between the lenth of the tie lines and the corresponding interfacial tension corroborates this finding

Isobaric Vapor−Liquid Equilibrium in the Systems Methyl 1,1-Dimethylethyl Ether + 2-Methyl-2-propanol and Methyl 1,1-Dimethylethyl Ether + 2-Methylpe…

1999

Consistent vapor−liquid equilibrium data for the binary and ternary systems methyl 1,1-dimethylethyl ether (MTBE) + 2-methyl-2-propanol (TBA) and methyl 1,1-dimethylethyl ether (MTBE) + 2-methylpentane + 2-methyl-2-propanol (TBA) are reported at 101.3 kPa at temperatures in the range 328 to 356 K. The results indicate that the systems deviate positively from ideality and that no azeotrope is present. The activity coefficients of the solutions were correlated with composition by Wilson, NRTL, and UNIQUAC models. It is shown that the models allow a very good prediction of the phase equilibrium of the ternary system using the pertinent parameters of the binary system. In addition, the Wisniak−…

Study of liquid–liquid equilibrium of the systems isobutyl acetate+acetic acid+water and isobutyl alcohol+acetic acid+water at different temperatures

2008

Abstract In this work, experimental liquid–liquid equilibria (LLE) data of the systems isobutyl acetate + acetic acid + water and isobutyl alcohol + acetic acid + water are presented. The liquid–liquid equilibria of both systems have been measured at 283.15 and 323.15 K. The NRTL and UNIQUAC models were applied to fit the data for both ternary systems. The interaction parameters obtained from both models successfully correlated the equilibrium compositions. The experimental tie lines were compared to the values predicted by the UNIFAC method. Moreover, the solvent capabilities of isobutyl acetate and isobutyl alcohol were compared.

A thermodynamic analysis on the coincidence of extrema conditions in the sorption equilibrium for ternary polymer systems

1993

Flory-Huggins theory of polymer solutions has been used to express the condition of extrema values in the total sorption, as well as the inversion point in the preferential adsorption parameters for termary polymer systems. Two approaches have been followed, the first considers the binary and ternary interaction parameters independent of polymer concentration and solvent composition. In the second one, this dependence has been introduced. Our attention is focused on the volume fraction of solvent mixture dependence of the above parameters, in order to confirm or not the coincidence between the extrema values and the inversion point. Several cosolvent and cononsolvent ternary polymer systems…

Liquid–Liquid Equilibria of Water + Ethanol + 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium Bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide Ternary System: Measurements and Correla…

2015

In this work authors present the experimental liquid–liquid equilibria (LLE) data of water + ethanol + 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([bmim][Tf2N]) system at different temperatures. The LLE of the system was obtained in the temperature range from 283.2 to 323.2 K. The nonrandom two liquid (NRTL) and universal quasichemical (UNIQUAC) models were used to correlate ternary systems. The equilibrium compositions were successfully correlated by the interaction parameters from both models, however UNIQUAC gave a more accurate correlation. Finally, a study about the solvent capability of ionic liquid was made in order to evaluate the possibility of separating the mi…
